NAS Fitness Center & Gymnasium

The Gymnasium is equipped with a full assortment of cardio equipment, free weights and selectorized weight equipment for a total body workout. The gymnasium features two side courts for basketball/volleyball within the full-length hardwood floor basketball court. The fitness center has an aerobics room and a racquetball court. The fitness center is also equipped with full shower and locker room facilities. Dry saunas are located in the men’s and women’s locker rooms. Scheduled aerobics classes are also offered. Two running trails are available with distances ranging from one-half mile to five miles.

The Fitness Center also offers a year-round schedule of tournaments and leagues. All tenant commands are eligible to participate in the “Captain’s Cup” competition for athletic supremacy among the military commands in the New Orleans area. The gym staff is happy to assist with organizing games or matches; i.e., racquetball, softball, basketball or softball games.

• Resale: Gatorade, water, a variety of supplemental drinks, a variety of Arizona Tea products, T-shirts, headsets and caps.
• Courts: Racquetball (open/challenge court, no reservation required), racquetball, basketball, volleyball. Reservations can be made 24 hours in advance.
• Men’s & Women’s locker rooms and saunas.

NSA Fitness Center (West Bank)

The Fitness Center offers a year-round schedule of tournaments and leagues. All tenant commands are eligible to participate in the “Captain’s Cup” competition for athletic supremacy among the military commands in the New Orleans area. Amenities include:

East Bank Fitness Center

• Free Weights: Complete line of free weights including dumbbells, a variety of benches, gravitrons and a 6-station, multi-purpose unit.
• Cardiovascular: Treadmills, elliptical cross trainer, bikes, stair climbers and cardio theater sound.
• Aerobics: Upon availability, high-intensity impact step aerobics.
• Athletic Gear Issue: Towels, racquetball rackets, weight belts, tennis rackets, basketballs.
• Courts: Racquetball, tennis, basketball, volleyball. Reservations can be made 24 hours in advance.
• Men’s & Women’s Locker room, Aerobics room and Sauna.

Athletic Fields
The following athletic fields, except for youth fields, are located on board both locations: one softball field at each base, a flag football field across from PSD at NSA, and a soccer field across from the CBQ, Bldg. 700, at NSA.

SWIMMING POOLS

The swimming pools are open from late May until early September. The NAS JRB Pool is a 25-meter, L-shaped pool. The NSA Pool is a 25-meter -rectangular pool. Both facilities have a children’s wading pool. Swimming lessons are available throughout the summer. Military lap swim is offered Monday through Friday, and recreational swim is available seven days a week. The pool may be rented for special functions after normal hours of operation. Swim class registration and pool pass purchase can be done at either pool or at one of the fitness centers during their hours of operation. Please understand that summer thunderstorms impact hours of operation.

NAS JRB Riverboat Lanes Bowling Center Bldg. 301 Ph: 678 - 3514
Riverboat Lanes is an 8-lane bowling center with automatic scoring and an awesome light and sound package. We offer open bowl, league play and special programs such as glow in the dark bowling and rock-n-roll bowling. The center has a full service snack bar that features daily lunch specials and our famous BBQ. We welcome reservations for private birthday parties (four lanes have bumpers), command functions or family gatherings.

NAS JRB Outdoor

The Outdoor Gear Rental located at NAS JRB offers a wide and varied menu of gear to meet the needs of your outdoor event. The following is a selection of our gear available for your next indoor or outdoor party: Coolers, canopies, tables, chairs, BBQ grills and crawfish pots. We offer the following camping and fishing equipment: Propane accessories, tents, sleeping bag pads, sleeping bags, boats, canoes, life vests and a variety of trailers to meet your requirements.

Skeet/Archery Range & Paintball
The outdoor recreation program offers a variety of outdoor sporting programs. The skeet range is open every other weekend; other times are available for group reservations. The archery range features a variety of targets and is available for rent. Call Outdoor Gear Rental at 678-3142 for more information. We offer two paintball courses open every Saturday, Sunday and holidays. We have everything you need! Call us for private party information, 678-3142.

The Liberty Program services single and geographic bachelor service personnel at NAS JRB, NSA and any other commands throughout the metro area who would like to participate.

The Liberty Program is intended to develop and improve social skills and leisure needs of single enlisted service members. This program targets single, active duty enlisted personnel between the ages of 18 and 24. These young adults are away from home, usually for the first time. The Liberty Program at MWR New Orleans tries to meet these needs of our service members by planning both on base and off base, parties, fund raisers, exciting trips and more.

Both centers offer computers, video games, movies, televisions, darts, pool tables, board games and ping pong.

Auto Care Services
MWR Auto Care Centers are for times when you prefer to do it yourself. The Auto Hobby Shop has the facility, equipment and tools available for you to change a spark plug or do a major overhaul or restoration project. The facility provides equipment for routine car maintenance such as oil change/lube, tire mounting, brake service, tire r-epair, tire rotation/balance, and replacing belts, hoses, CV axles and struts.

A CD library of repair manuals and tools, including metric, are available to our patrons. Also available at the NAS JRB Auto Care Center is radiator flushing, air -conditioner recharging and a motorcycle lift. In addition, computerized tire spin balancing equipment and hydraulic lifts are provided. Trained MWR personnel are available to assist patrons in performing “do-it-yourself” projects.

All fees are based upon work being performed. Services are available to active duty, retirees, reservists, DOD civilian employees and family members. For information or to inquire about additional services, call the Naval Support Activity at (504) 678-2205, or NAS JRB at (504) 678-3448.

Library

The NSA Library houses more than 10,000 fiction and non-fiction books, both for adults and children. The library subscribes to dozens of magazines and newspapers. Our special collections include: the Louisiana collection, the MCPON reading list and an extensive Navy and World War II collection.

The Library houses a juvenile/youth reading room; story time is held weekly. Call 678-2210 for times and dates. The facility also has five computers with Internet access, a scanner and a printer for use by library patrons. All computers are equipped with filtering software.

A Library Registration card in the name of the sponsor is kept on file and guests must show a valid ID. The Library is open to all active duty military, retired, reserves, DOD civilian employees and their dependents. Children under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

NAS JRB is expecting to open a new state-of-the-art library in the summer of 2007 with several thousand titles as well as computer stations, magazines and more. The facility will be located across from Belle Chasse Academy on Russell Drive in Bldg. 370.

Vehicle Storage
Outdoor Storage with 24-hour access is available at NAS JRB and NSA for your car, camper, boat or any recreational vehicle that requires more space than you have available. For NSA outdoor storage call the RV Park at 678-9230 to accommodate your needs. Call the NAS JRB Auto Hobby Shop at 678-3448 for your outdoor storage needs.

NSA Magnolia Shade Recreational Vehicle (RV) Park

Magnolia Shade RV Park is located on the Naval Support Activity in Algiers, Louisiana. We offer 31 park sites with water, sewer hook-up and electric (110/220). The RV Park has restrooms, showers and a laundry room. A gray/black water dump station is available on site. Many amenities are available for the military traveler aboard NSA. Located nearby are a Commissary, Navy Exchange, gas station, food services and more.

Magnolia Shade is open to active duty military, reserve, retirees, and DOD employees at $15 per night. Cost for guests accompanied by authorized personnel is $20 per night. Reservations are accepted three months in advance for active duty, two months in advance for all others. Mardi Gras reservations are accepted six months in advance. Phone reservations are accepted with a 1-day deposit, balance due upon arrival. We have a 72-hour cancellation policy and an in-park cancellation policy of 24-hours.

MWR PICNIC AND PAVILION AREAS

four at NSA West Bank, one at NSA East Bank and three at NAS JRB.

NSA Bldg. H-100, Main Pavilion,
Carmick Park Ph: 678-2527/2285

NSA’s four West Bank sites (Main Pavilion, Navy Clinic Pavilion, Carmick Park, Pool Pavilion) consist of large grassy areas, picnic shelters, barbecue pits and picnic tables, and can be used for various recreational events, command functions, family and small group use. There are small playgrounds/recreational items located adjacent to each site except Carmick Park. Each of these facilities has restroom availability. The daily rental fee for these facilities is $50; fees for command military functions are exempt.

Main Pavilion:
Located on Constellation Drive near Bldg. 410. Accommodates 300 people and has a covered pavilion with lights, two barbeque grills, eight picnic tables and several electrical outlets. There is a playground area and sand volleyball court, with restrooms available. There are two additional smaller satellite pavilions located approximately 25 yards away; each has a small barbeque grill and a couple of picnic tables.

Navy Clinic Pavilion: Located on the west side of the Navy Exchange (Bldg H-100). Accommodates 200 and people and has a covered pavilion area with ceiling fans, eight picnic tables, one large grill, an outdoor basketball court and a sand volleyball court. Lights are available with electrical outlets attached. Restrooms are available.

Carmick Park: Located on Carmick Street across from the BOQ (Bldg 700). Carmick Park has one large grill, two picnic tables, two tennis courts and a concrete foundation, with restrooms available.

Pool Pavilion: Located next to the NSA Swimming Pool. Accommodates 75 people and has a small covered area with four picnic tables, two small grills, lights and electricity. This site has access to swimming area, playground and waterslide, with restrooms available.

NSA East Bank
Medal of Honor Parade Field and Pavilion Area (East Bank) is located on NSA East Bank. The Pavilion Area has two racquetball courts, two basketball courts, tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, a walking track and a small gazebo with a table underneath. The Parade Field is mainly used for official ceremonies. A covered area with bleachers is typically used as a reviewing stand for officials and guests. Restrooms are available.

NAS JRB Pavilion Sites

Site One: Accommodates 200 and has electricity, water and inside restrooms. This site has access to the softball field, volleyball courts and a playground.

Site Two: Accommodates 100 and has access to shaded area, picnic tables, grills, a volleyball court and an open field. Restrooms are within about 100 yards.

Site Three: Accommodates 500 and has an open shaded area with picnic tables and grills. This site has access to playground, volleyball, and softball fields, with restrooms within walking distance.

NAS Frame Shop Bldg. 56 Ph: 678-7519
The Frame Shop is located across the street from the base pool in Bldg. 56. This is a custom shop with a large selection of frames and mats. Catalogs are available for choosing art prints. Professional custom framing is available for collectible or other valuable pieces and artwork. The knowledgeable staff also does frame repair such as replacing glass or mats. The staff has several years of experience and specializes in custom work. No jobs is too big or too small!

NAS Vet Clinic

The Vet Clinic is also in Bldg. 56. The veterinarian visits NAS JRB three days a month. The visits are usually held during the second full week of the month on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The vet clinic is available to military active and retired personnel only. The veterinarians travel from Fort Polk and Barksdale AFB to hold clinics for us. They provide services for cats and dogs. There are no facilities or veterinarians on duty for aftercare, so it is not possible to do any treatments requiring surgery. We do offer yearly shots, ear and skin treatments and exams. Heartworm prevention medication, flea prevention, medicated shampoos and other items are available to the military at the frame shop during normal working hours. You will need to have a record on file with the clinic and a heartworm test within one year to purchase heartworm and flea preventatives, as these are controlled substances.
