Program Overview

The Child Development Center (CDC) program offers enrichment opportunities designed to meet individual physical, social, emotional and cognitive growth of children six weeks to five years old.

Training
All caregivers are required to complete training in CPR, First Aid, Heimlich Maneuver and Child Abuse Prevention and Reporting (Navy Standardized Caregiver Training Module 14) within the first 60 days of employment. In addition, training in Basic Child Development, reading of the employee handbook and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) must be completed within the first six months. In 18 months the caregiver should complete the 13 Navy Standardized Caregiver Training Modules.

Accreditation
The Child Development Center is accredited by the National Association of Early Childhood Programs and must be re-accredited every three years. In a memorandum issued April 17, 1997, President Clinton praised the military child care program as the model for federal, state, tribal and local child care agencies nationwide. In honoring this acclamation, this Navy Child Development Center strives to maintain the high quality of child care for which this program has been recognized.

Enrollment
Families transitioning to the area who wish to enroll their children in the Child Development Center must complete a form to place the child on the waiting list. Children are enrolled as space becomes available in the program on a priority system. Priority is assigned based on date the form is received and the family composition. Single parents and dual military families have the highest priorities. Forms may be faxed to 678-2090. Call the numbers listed above to obtain copies of the form.

Safe, dependable child care is an ongoing concern to military members and their families. Frequent moves make finding appropriate child care a challenge. The Naval Support Activity and Naval Air Station, Joint Reserve Base, New Orleans sponsor a licensed, child care provider program through each facility’s Child Development Center. As a licensed child care provider, a military member can also earn supplemental income.

Upon approval from base groups, each home is then inspected by base organizations to ensure that a clean, safe and healthy learning environment will be provided for the children. These organizations include the Fire Department, Preventive Medicine, Safety and the Child Development Center. Upon completion of these requirements, a license will be submitted and signed by the Commanding Officer, which is valid for one year.

Military dependents living in base housing and now military dependents living off base are eligible and should contact the Child Development Center at 678-3654 for more information.
